Claiming your freedom after surviving the damaging affects of an ex-gay experience and/or religious abuse.
A Personal letter of invitation from the instructor, Dr. Jallen Rix:
Hello, and thanks for looking into the possibility of being a part of this class. It's going to be a great experience for me and I hope it will be the same for you if you choose to participate.
Did you once run with Christian Gay-haters, but now you sometimes feel more like a Gay Christian-hater? Ex-gay and religious fanatic survivors have an unusual set of experiences, and this class' main purpose is to help us make sense of it.
This is not an informational discourse for people to learn more about the ex-gay movement. This is for individuals who have ex-gay and/or religious abuse in their backgrounds, wherever you might be in the process of dealing with it (or not). You might be fresh out of the closet with you're mind still reeling from the ex-gay circumstances that got you to this point. You may have left the ex-gay environment a while ago, accepted your sexuality and got on with living, but now there's a sense you're ready to tie up some emotional loose ends. You may not be an ex-gay survivor, but you have experienced your share of religious indoctrination and it's time you sought some insight and healing about it. Maybe when the church expelled you from the ministry because of your sexuality, you rejected everything spiritual if they were going to hurt you, you were going to hurt them right back. But just like a bad debt, a bad experience doesn't always go away simply by ignoring it. These things have a way of intruding on our happiness at the most inopportune times, especially getting in the way of fully embracing one's sexuality and relationships.
This class (the first of its kind) is a lively combination of group discussion, multi-media, relevant information, reflection, take-home activities, sexuality education, and a safe place to:
-- Relieve survivor's loss, guilt and isolation with a group of people who have gone through similar experiences.
-- Sort through and discard the religious leftovers to find your unique connection with spirituality.
-- Retread some of the ingrained sexual suppression, negativity and compartmentalization by closing the gap between your mind, spirit and sexuality.
-- Compensate for the years of self-hate by learning deeper ways to unconditionally love yourself.
-- Minimize the habit of denial while maximizing your authentic self.
-- Gain some historical perspective about the relationship between spirituality and sexuality.
-- Develop strategies of strength and confidence to counteract subtle and long-term religious and ex-gay influences.
-- Defuse the emotional potency of your ex-gay experience so it can rest peacefully in the past.
